Help for Heroes

I know it's a little early to start the Chelsea previews, but this is in a good cause. One of the show gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show this year is by the charity Help for Heroes, designed by Drusilla Stewart and William Beresford of All Seasons Design, and sponsored by B&Q.
Help for Heroes was started in 2007 to provide support to the wounded servicemen and women of the UK. They now raise approximately £1 million a month and provide direct help to those wounded and their families. You can read more about what they do on their website.

The garden will be a symbolic sanctuary, where those who do not return safely can find focus and the peace with which to deal with either physical or mental trauma after the ordeal of operations.

Drusilla's own husband is going to Afghanistan in May and the design was conceived after chatting to the wives of servicemen whose husbands are about to deploy with him.
Drusilla says B&Q have generously given money to help them build the garden, but now that they are about to start building the garden at Chelsea, they are calling on friends, family and business contacts to help them reach their fundraising target of £30,000 for Help for Heroes .
If you would like to help, you can do so in two ways. Go to the fundraising page and make a donation. Or buy a limited edition Petunia 'Help for Heroes Mix' at B&Q stores. £2.35 from every £5 pack will go to the charity, and the flowers will be in the stores in the week commencing Monday 18 May (Chelsea Flower Show week).

If anyone is going to the show, Help the Heroes will be giving away wristbands and badges, and encouraging visitors to donate money into the “Wishing Well", and they will also be selling plants from the garden when the show ends on Saturday 24 May.

The “Help for Heroes Sanctuary Garden” itself will also be auctioned off at the end of the show and the hope is that a green-fingered philanthropist will come along and donate a big chunk of money to have the garden recreated in their own backyard. The design can be adapted to any sized garden, domestic or commercial.

The Chelsea Flower Show runs from 19 to 23 May. For further information on the show, or to purchase tickets, click here.

LTD 100 Collection: Exclusive Behind the Scenes Look!

In what is becoming one of the most highly anticipated events of the fashion calendar, ASOS has teamed up with the London College of Fashion once again for the LTD 100 collection.

Those with their fingers firmly on the fashion pulse will be well versed in the LTD 100 but for the uninitiated, here's the lowdown:

Each year ASOS asks students from the London College of Fashion to design one or more unique pieces to be sold on ASOS.com. We then enlist the help of a fashion insider judging panel – this year, designers Markus Lupfer and Tim Soar along with style blogger Susie Lau (Style Bubble) – who take on the tough job of whittling down the entries to just 100 pieces. To make things even harder, the judges must then select three winners in the categories of womenswear, menswear and accessories, plus one overall winner. Phew!

We spent the day with the panel at London College of Fashion to get an exclusive behind the scenes look at which pieces captured the judges' creative attention and of course, to give you a sneek peek at some of these one-off designs from the fashion stars of the future that you'll have the chance to buy when this year's LTD 100 hits the site...

Last year, this coveted collection sold out in less than two minutes, so be sure to make a note in your diary for this year's LTD 100 launch on 3 July 2009!

The War Store

ARMY mum Rhiannon Manning sits in her garage piled high with food and basic supplies - to send our desperately under-funded heroes in Afghanistan.

Furious Rhiannon is posting 30 boxes a week to the frontline after learning they are having to live without essentials like SOAP and TOOTHPASTE.

She set up a campaign to collect as many items on the troops' wishlist as she could after getting desperate phone calls about the situation from her Rifleman son Arfon Thomas, 20.

Supporters send toiletries, food such as Pot Noodles and other basics. Rhiannon and hubby Andy sort them into shoeboxes in their garage in Biggin Hill, Kent.

The lack of supplies is revealed days after we launched our "Don't You Know There's A Bloody War On?" campaign demanding a better deal for troops in Afghanistan.

It follows revelations of shortages of kit, helicopters and safe armoured vehicles.

Rhiannon, 40, said: "My son went in June and I found out there was nothing out there. They were having to share or go without.

"It's not just his regiment, but in general."

Blasting the Government's lack of support, she said: "If you expect these guys to go to war they should have soap and toothpaste. They should be looked after."

Rhiannon began by sending weekly parcels to Arfon and his 4 Rifles comrades in Nad-e-Ali, Helmand. She now has 600 Facebook supporters and a network of helpers. She said she gets constant pleas for socks which wear thin on harsh daily patrols.

Rhiannon added: "They have no money out there and no shops. I shouldn't have to do this. But no one else is going to help. It's down to the families and the British public to bail them out.

"It's a huge boost to morale when they get the parcels. But it irks me when you hear other troops like the Americans are better looked after."

Arfon is home from his six-month tour next month. But Rhiannon vowed: "I won't stop."

An MoD spokesman said last night: "Toiletries are a personal responsibility and are available from NAAFI outlets in main bases to purchase prior to deploying to more austere bases."
