Forces Reunited

On the 5th January I attended the studio audience of the filming of Forces Reunited. The filming took place in Sky Studios, Isleworth.
The show was hosted by former GMTV host Fiona Phillips, who helped bring together long lost friends and relatives of members of the Armed Forces.
Attending the show meant I could do first hand observational research and conduct brief interviews with members of the audience.
The show will be aired on the 5th May on Sky real lives, so make sure you look out for me!!

Arabella Dorman

At work in Afghanistan. She spent several weeks with the Rifles as a war artist in Basra, Iraq, in 2007.

She returned with sketch books full of images that capture the end of the bloodiest six months suffered by any British unit in Afghanistan

Help for Heroes Drink Reception 04/12/09

On Friday 4th Decemeber we were invited to join a private drink reception to celebrate the opening of "The Hero Inside" photography exhibition and to promote the book in Nottingham Council House on the market square.

The event was from 6pm-8pm, and allowed some of Help for Heroes higher donaters to view the exhibition, to purchase the photography or the book if they wish to. This event was great for us as we were able to meet and speak about our event to the photographer herself Gill Brown, Help for Heroes regional manager and the Mayor of Nottingham.

Key Quotes:

"98 pence from every pound donated goes directly to the charity, only 2 pence is spent on admin costs"

"The wounded soldiers are the celebrities"

"On average £45 000 is donated to Help for Heroes every day"

Nottingham's newest model

How I was spotted as a top model

Written by: Riah Matthews
Published Nottingham Evening Post, Thursday 12 November 09

AT HOME in Woodthorpe in hoody and jeans, 16-year-old Alice Hillyer is every inch the typical schoolgirl. But in London Alice is known as Riley – and works as a model for the UK's number-one agency. This time last year, Arnold Hill student Alice – though she now prefers "Riley" – went on a school trip to the Clothes Show Live and was scouted by London-based agency Select, who picked the new name.

She said: "I was with my best friend who just said, Oh you're always getting scouted! I had done a bit of modelling before, so it wasn't a big shock." Riley now spends her spare time in London, taking part in shoots and castings.

Standing nearly 5ft 10in, she said she had always felt very tall compared to her school friends – but now felt small next to models she described as "massive". She said she juggled schoolwork with modelling and has had nine jobs since being spotted, appearing in teen magazines Sugar and Shout.

Riley has managed to stay modest and said she put any nasty comments down to jealousy.
She said: "In Sugar they were really nice pictures – everyone said it looked like me, but really different.

"It was weird to see myself. "At school once, the magazine was on the table and some girls were like, Oh my God, that's you! "My friends are all really nice – but I've heard some people say that I'm 'not even a good model'."

For each job Riley does the agency takes 20% of the fee; she gets to keep the rest. She said: "I have spent most of the money on clothes! Mum goes mad at me and says I need to save."

Riley said she wasn't sure modelling was something she would pursue full-time after school.
She said: "Next year I'd like to do beauty therapy at Clarendon College. "I want to get some qualifications before I go into modelling full-time."

The fashion industry has been criticised for the effect it has had on some young girls but Riley's mum, Jenny, a caterer, said she was happy for her daughter to pursue a career there.
She added: "Sometimes we worry about safety when she goes down to London, but she's very capable and sensible."

When Riley works away from home she stays with one of the bookers from her agency and navigates her own way to castings using the Underground. Jenny said: "I've been down with her before and traipsing around castings isn't much fun. It's much harder than a normal Saturday job."

Riley's 21-year-old sister Lucy also does some modelling and the agency has asked about her twin brother, Joe. Jenny said: "I'm not sure where we get all of our tall children from!"
Select Models will be looking for new faces exclusively at the Clothes Show Live from December 4-9 at Birmingham NEC.

More Models from Notts

Riley is not the only Notts model we have featured in the Evening Post. Remember these?

Lisa Bangert (right), former page three model, from Mansfield. She appeared as an extra in Tomorrow Never Dies.

Charissa Watson, from Sherwood, Miss Black Britain finalist 2008. The competition prompted a record number of comments on the Post website.

Tiffany Tyler, from Bramcote, is Miss Nottingham. She is the girlfriend of Forest player Robert Earnshaw.

Lea Walker, from Carlton, glamour model. The mum-of-three was the sixth person to be booted out of Big Brother 2006.

Would be great if we could get Riley or any of these local Nottingham Models involved with our event.

Afghan Heroes

Fallen Soldiers' Mums Set Up Heroes Charity

3:00pm UK, Tuesday September 15, 2009, Katie Stallard, West of England correspondent

The mothers of seven soldiers killed within 24 hours of each other in Afghanistan have launched a new charity in their memory.

Afghan Heroes has been set up to support the families of the fallen and those on the front line who have witnessed the loss of comrades and friends.
The mothers met at RAF Lyneham waiting for their sons' bodies to return home.

Denise Harris, mother of Corporal Lee Scott, who was killed on foot patrol in Helmand province on July 10, told Sky News: "They were soldiers doing their job.

"We, the mothers, have a special bond as our boys came home together. The grief for our families and everyone who knew them has been too painful to bear.

"We feel that there is a need to provide support to all family members. Sadly, we are not alone."

Over 210 soldiers have now been killed in Afghanistan. Many more have returned home injured and there is a need, say these mothers, for a new charity specifically dedicated to the welfare of their friends and family.

Ms Harris said: "As far as we are aware this is the first charity specifically set up to support British troops in Afghanistan.

"We recognise the marvellous work of other charities, many of which have provided years of support for our military.

"But we believe there are now specific needs for the families of those who are serving in Afghanistan that need to be met.

"The level of that need has reached a place where action is needed now."

One of their first campaigns will be the Thank A Soldier initiative, where home comforts will be sent to the front line in care packages.

The aim is for a minimum of one parcel per tour to be sent to each of the 9,000 service personnel in Afghanistan on Armed Forces Day in June next year.

The charity will also create support groups and hold charity events for the families of the fallen so that they can come together and give each other mutual support.

These seven mothers of seven brothers-in-arms are determined that their loss should not have been in vain.

The soldiers whose sacrifice inspired the charity are Corporal Lee Scott, Rifleman William Aldridge, Rifleman James Backhouse, Private John Brackpool, Corporal Jonathan Horne, Rifleman Joseph Murphy and Rifleman Daniel Simpson.

Paul Smith's Charity work

Paul Smith for War Child Charity T-shirt

Paul Smith Jeans have designed a T-shirt to support the launch of the new War Child Heroes charity album. Limited to 250 pieces, this fuchsia slim fit t-shirt features a repeat 'gun flower' print adapted from the featured album cover designed by John Squire.

War Child is charity that helps protect the most hard to reach children hit by war, poverty and marginalisation. February will see the launch of the new War Child Album which fuses the biggest names in music history with today's hottest artists. Tracks include Duffy covering Sir Paul McCartney’s "Live and Let Die", The Kooks covering The Kinks "Victoria" and Hot Chip covering Joy Division’s "Transmission etc.

All proceeds for both the album and the Paul Smith Jeans T-shirt will raise money for this important charity.

The t-shirt is made from Pima cotton and features an American seam across the shoulders. War Child logo is printed in blue on the nape and a Paul Smith signature logo tab is sewn to the left side seam.

I think Paul Smith would be great to try and contact for Help for Heroes. He has helped up with a number of charities including War Child 2009 (above) and the NSPCC 2007.

ASOS LTD 100

LTD 100 Collection: Exclusive Behind the Scenes Look!

started on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 4:06 PM in ASOS Today

In what is becoming one of the most highly anticipated events of the fashion calendar, ASOS has teamed up with the London College of Fashion once again for the LTD 100 collection.

Those with their fingers firmly on the fashion pulse will be well versed in the LTD 100 but for the uninitiated, here's the lowdown:

Each year ASOS asks students from the London College of Fashion to design one or more unique pieces to be sold on ASOS.com. We then enlist the help of a fashion insider judging panel – this year, designers Markus Lupfer and Tim Soar along with style blogger Susie Lau (Style Bubble) – who take on the tough job of whittling down the entries to just 100 pieces. To make things even harder, the judges must then select three winners in the categories of womenswear, menswear and accessories, plus one overall winner. Phew!

We spent the day with the panel at London College of Fashion to get an exclusive behind the scenes look at which pieces captured the judges' creative attention and of course, to give you a sneek peek at some of these one-off designs from the fashion stars of the future that you'll have the chance to buy when this year's LTD 100 hits the site...

Last year, this coveted collection sold out in less than two minutes, so be sure to make a note in your diary for this year's LTD 100 launch on 3 July 2009!

The collection is launched at the perfect time to work with the charity event - would ASOS and/or LCF like to get involved to make it a student event through and through

Topshop/Topman

Fashion Targets Breast Cancer

Topshop/Topman's involvement, whether it would be to use their clothes in a Fashion video/show/auction/etc, would be a good for the Help for Heroes Charity event, since they appeal to a large sector of the student market.

Currently other charity events Topshop are involved with is 'Fashion targets Breast Cancer'.
