he Hero Inside - Help for Heroes Charity Fundraising Book of Photographs

The Hero Inside is the officially authorised fund-raising book for Help for Heroes, the charity founded to support wounded servicemen and women in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Conceived and photographed by Gill Shaw, this inspirational book is a thought-provoking and, at times, emotional record of the experiences and traumas both on the battlefield and at home and is a tribute to our Armed Forces and those who support them on their return.

It is a positive an uplifting book of beautifully shot photographs of some of our heroes, with the aim of the photographer, Gill Shaw, to show our War Heroes in a positive light in these negative times. With a foreword by Ross Kemp and featuring Help for Heroes' celebrities, this superb book shows and tells us what life is like on battlefields and the support offered at home, along with support from some of the UK's best loved celebrities.

SWAGS!

NAKED forces WAGs have sprawled themselves across their partners' kit to raise cash for our injured heroes.

With tanks and fighter planes as their backdrops, the mini Army of beauties declared phwoar by baring all to make a nude calendar in aid of forces charity Help for Heroes.

The Servicemen's Wives and Girlfriends (SWAGs) were inspired by their husbands and boyfriends putting their lives on the line for the country.

So the elite unit of stunners stripped off to prove their bravery too.

The 2010 calendar was the brainchild of 20-year-old Kelly Monk whose husband-to-be is in the Army.

See more pictures in our slideshow below.

Pretty Kelly knows only to well the importance of The Sun-backed wounded troops cause from hearing fiancee Pte Andrew Mason's tales of war from two tours of Afghanistan.

She she got the lovers of other troops to join the ranks after spreading the word on online forces forums.

"Everyone connected to the forces is so proud of the charity and wants to raise money for it," Kelly said.

"I wanted to do something a bit different and was joking around at first but then one thing led to another."

Kelly, from Southampton, Hampshire, had no problem finding 40 babes willing to peel off their clothes.

"We were all total strangers," she added.

"But you get to know people very quickly when you are all standing there naked."

The team led by lucky snapper Roy Gooding were keen to bring a military flavour to the calendar.

So they posed up with battle tanks and even sun-bathed on the wing an RAF jet.

Others got hot and soapy washing planes and Army vehicles in the buff.

"It was important to make the calendar to be action packed.

"It looks fantastic and is a real team effort," she added.

Extroverted Kelly is Miss January sitting in the cockpit of a fearsome Sea Vixen plane.

She said Andrew, 21, serving with the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, is right behind her.

"He thinks I'm a nutter but he doesn't seem to mind too much.

"He is very supportive of what I'm doing and he knows its for a good cause."

Fellow forces nudist Lynsey Keast revealed all in a Navy submarine with only a small strategically placed work-belt protecting her modesty.

"I was a bit nervous, but within about 10 minutes we all realised that we were in the same boat and it was a great laugh," the 24-year-old from Tidworth, Wiltshire, said.

Her boyfriend Sgt Andrew Moffat, 26, has toured Iraq with 3 Division Royal Signals.

"He is just so proud of me and all the girls," she added.

"We just wanted to give something back."

Photographer Roy said: "We hope to raise £50,000 and I think that is very achievable.

"But I'm certainly a lucky man to be able to photograph all these girls."

Top brass have also saluted the saucy fundraiser.

Army chief General Sir Richard Dannatt praised the SWAGs and said: "I hope your efforts and the calendar are a great success in raising money for Help for Heroes.

"On behalf of those serving, thank you for your brilliant support to our troops."

Military awards 2009

rigTeaserImage

TROOPS in danger on the front line are "too often out of mind", Prince Charles has told The Sun.

And today he urges the nation to do more to remember the Forces' extraordinary sacrifices.

Marking the launch of The Sun Military Awards 2009, he writes: "Sometimes it is not until they return home in flag-draped coffins that we become truly aware of all that we are asking of them."

Charles is founder and patron of the awards - nicknamed The Millies and now in their second year. We want them to be even better than last year's inaugural night.

For that, we need YOUR help again, to nominate your military heroes from the current year.

CLICK HERE TO CAST YOUR VOTE

It's not just service in Afghanistan or Iraq that we want to recognise. The 11 Millies are for the full array of Armed Forces endeavour - from fearless troops and medics to the thousands of staff behind the scenes, at home as well as abroad. Some deeds have already made headlines this year.

Do you think Prince Harry's hero Marine Ben McBean deserves the Overcoming Adversity award for being the first ever double amputee to run the London Marathon?

Or is Royal Marine Sgt Noel Connolly a True Grit award winner for rugby tackling a suicide bomber to save his 30-strong troop?

There are many others whose heroics have gone unsung - largely due to extraordinary modesty.

If you know about them, tell us. Nominations close on Monday September 14.

The judging panel includes England football captain John Terry, Sun columnist Jeremy Clarkson, Olympic runner and ex-soldier Dame Kelly Holmes, TV's Ross Kemp and four ex-Service chiefs.

The winners will be announced during a televised ceremony at London's Hampton Court Palace on December 15.

Once more throwing the MoD's strong support behind the awards, Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup said last night: "The awards are an excellent opportunity for everyone to say Thank You."

Katrina Hodge

Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge, nicknamed Combat Barbie when she turned up for her army basic training with “two pink suitcases, a pair of pink kitten heels, a pink coat and blonde hair,” is now vying for the title of Miss England.

But don’t let the girlie image fool you. In 2005, Hodge received a bravery commendation after saving the lives of two fellow soldiers in Iraq by disarming an insurgent who was holding them hostage at gunpoint.

They were held at gunpoint when their vehicle overturned but L/Cpl Hodge punched the gunman and took his rifles.

She said: “I was in complete shock at first. The force of the accident caused our vehicle to roll over three times and threw us off guard.

“As I came round, the Iraqi suspect was standing over us with the rifles. I knew if I didn’t act fast then our lives would be in danger.

“I punched him and the force startled him enough for me to retrieve the rifles from him.”

The 21-year-old combat veteran, who is also a part-time model, made the final cut for the pageant by winning the Miss Tunbridge Wells crown.

Currently based at Frimley Park Hospital in Camberley, Hodge is a military clerk with The Adjutant General’s Corps. If she takes the Miss England title on July 18, she will go on to compete in the Miss World 2008 pageant.

Oxjam Derby 2009

Various Venues TBC

In a nationwide initiative to fight poverty with music Oxjam Derby 2009 will break the mould of your quintessential charity gig. You know the sort; a muddy field filled with middle-aged, grotty hippies stuffing their faces with organically sourced houmous and lentil wraps whilst they ‘bop’ along to some two-bit acoustic outfit that are so devoid of emotion it’s difficult to believe they actually exist. By stepping away from the traditional hard-line environmentalist philosophy that leaves no room for a frenzied crowd of party people Oxjam 09 will attempt to respond to the contemporary climate in a contemporary way. With a seductive and eclectic line up veers away from the typical terrain of the charity gig, Oxjam 09 offers not one but two nights (and one day) on the tiles. Partnering with a range of artists, venues and performers Oxjam 09 will be a live music extravaganza spanning genres and tastes so that whatever you’re into, whether it be dirty beats, funk or heavy-hitting dance do not miss this.

This is so hot off the press there are no furter details at the  mo- but we’ll keep you posted. More info will be available at www.oxjam.org.uk

Interfiliere S/S 2010 colour trends

Interfiliere have released a massive selection of colours for their fashion colour trends report for Spring / Summer 2010. It looks as though we're in for a very green-based season with the a wide variety being featured in the palette; though also prevalent are pinks, blues, browns and even a neon green (of which we are not particular keen).

Whilst at first glance the palette looks vast it seems to play on quite a similar set of hues, featuring mostly light & bright summery colours which try to capture a younger and a more up beat tone then the much more demure colours we saw from Pantone's colours for fall/winter of 2009 & 2010. Stylists involved with the viannual colour meeting organised by Eurovet have said that while we will probably see these colours used on their own to some degree, we will mostly see them as parts of either embroidery or used in extremely colourful pop graffiti prints. Also predicted is a re-occurrence of the romantic trend and inspirations taken from the Pop Art of the sixties and seventies.

Day Spa's

We could approach Spa's such as Eden Hall Day Spa in Nottingham to donate De-Stress day packages if we decide to something for the wives of the soldiers as well.

Help for Heroes

I know it's a little early to start the Chelsea previews, but this is in a good cause. One of the show gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show this year is by the charity Help for Heroes, designed by Drusilla Stewart and William Beresford of All Seasons Design, and sponsored by B&Q.
Help for Heroes was started in 2007 to provide support to the wounded servicemen and women of the UK. They now raise approximately £1 million a month and provide direct help to those wounded and their families. You can read more about what they do on their
website.
The garden will be a symbolic sanctuary, where those who do not return safely can find focus and the peace with which to deal with either physical or mental trauma after the ordeal of operations.
Drusilla's own husband is going to Afghanistan in May and the design was conceived after chatting to the wives of servicemen whose husbands are about to deploy with him.
Drusilla says B&Q have generously given money to help them build the garden, but now that they are about to start building the garden at Chelsea, they are calling on friends, family and business contacts to help them reach their fundraising target of £30,000 for Help for Heroes .
If you would like to help, you can do so in two ways. Go to the
fundraising page and make a donation. Or buy a limited edition Petunia 'Help for Heroes Mix' at B&Q stores. £2.35 from every £5 pack will go to the charity, and the flowers will be in the stores in the week commencing Monday 18 May (Chelsea Flower Show week).
If anyone is going to the show, Help the Heroes will be giving away wristbands and badges, and encouraging visitors to donate money into the “Wishing Well", and they will also be selling plants from the garden when the show ends on Saturday 24 May.
The “Help for Heroes Sanctuary Garden” itself will also be auctioned off at the end of the show and the hope is that a green-fingered philanthropist will come along and donate a big chunk of money to have the garden recreated in their own backyard. The design can be adapted to any sized garden, domestic or commercial.

The Chelsea Flower Show runs from 19 to 23 May. For further information on the show, or to purchase tickets, click here.

I added this as I thought that she may want us to get in touch to attend the event
